Ian has over 35 years of practical leadership experience, having led national and multi-national civilian / military teams of up to 1200 on operations and in the office. He also has a long standing interest in developing the leadership capability of others and spent four and a half years as head of the MOD’s world-class leadership and management centre. Here he was responsible, inter alia, for improving the strategic leadership ability of those destined to work at the very top of Defence in the UK. He regularly lectures to senior UK and international military and civilian audiences on leadership.
Ian’s career in the Royal Marines has involved deploying on operations to Northern Ireland, Iraq and Afghanistan, principally with 3 Commando Brigade, and in a broad range of staff appointments. These have encompassed HR, procurement, policy and training and education. He has been involved in a number of major change programmes and is skilled at achieving high quality outcomes; driving through efficiency and building effective networks through motivating teams to reach their full potential. He has worked at the strategic level in the Ministry of Defence and in the Cabinet Office on the 2010 Strategic Defence and Security Review.
He is a graduate of the Higher Command and Staff Course, Royal College of Defence Studies and Advanced Command and Staff Course. He is also a Companion of the Chartered Management Institute, and a Fellow of the Institute of Leadership and Management.
Predictably, his hobbies include military history, keeping fit and comedy.
